I need to learn to forgive myself
Posted : 30 Nov, 2025 02:07 PM

The reason why I don’t believe anyone will ever want me is not because of the way I see myself on the outside, but because of the person I was in my past. I wasn’t the type of person who went around and caused any trouble, but I used to have a certain addiction and I kept promising God that I would stop, but I kept breaking those promises. I’m not sure I can forgive myself for that. In my eyes I am the lowest scum of the earth. Today in church I was talking (silently) to God, and I believe God told me that I need to forgive myself. It’s strange, because I heard this in a Christian series I’ve been watching lately. It’s hard to forgive myself, knowing that I broke so many promises to God.

As a matter of "FORGIVING ONESELF", Jesus says to forgive THOSE that sin against us. One sins against oneself. THOSE that sin against us includes oneself. One sins against oneself. (1 Corinthians 6;18 is an example of that.) Jesus is telling us to "forgive those that trespass against us." Those that trespass against us includes ourselves and oneself. Therefore, I believe Jesus is telling us to forgive ourselves too. The Bible says that one's enemies will be the member of his own house. Cain killed his brother Abel. Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery. Responses to jealousy. Indeed, people do sin. And people sin against themselves. We ask God to forgive us as we forgive those that sin against us. We definitely sin against ourselves as well as sinning against others. One sins against oneself in a number of ways. One lives where one should not live. One eats what one should not eat. One drinks what one shouldn't drink. One does to oneself what one should not do to oneself. In not forgiving others, one sins against oneself as well as carrying an unforgiving spirit we sin against ourselves as well as an unforgiving spirit rots within us. We definitely sin against ourselves in many ways. Marrying a person we should not marry. There are different forms of sin. And we definitely sin against ourselves. I assert that often the one who sins against one the most is often oneself. The alcoholic sins against himself. With every drink he takes, he sins against himself. Therein, he sins against others as well for the body is a Temple of the Holy Spirit. But my point here is that we do not only sin against others; we also sin against ourselves. We might be sinning against ourselves to be on this site. Years wasted being on upsetting sites and having no fruit from the years we wasted writing scammers and arguing with arguers that would never make a good mate. One might forgive themselves and get off the site. But we are relational beings, and boredom gets hold of us and a dog returns to its v----.

Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Therfore a sin against one's own body is a sin against the Lord that purchased the body.

There's no place in all of scripture, directly or implied, that commands anyone to forgive themselves. It is not even possible. Any sin against one's own self is a sin against God. There is mercy to be found only in Jesus Christ, the Lord, the only begotten Son of God and no place within thine own self.

I find it to be quite revelatory to see just how many people will stand in direct opposition with sound doctrine, looking to dispute against the truth. Some men do that to see if there are any different possibilities than what's presented, but when scripture is used out of its context to support an idea that is not written down, but is in direct conflict with the clear teachings of scripture, that is not an upright way to try to discover the truth. That's a deceitful way to fight the truth.

I do not understand why anyone in the faith of JESUS CHRIST would even think for a moment that a secular idea such as "orgiving oneself" would be possible, let alone a biblical idea. Using that kind of strategy to approach any topic, one can try to argue to justify anything that they want to. It will not be sound and it will not hold up to scrutiny. It also isn't going to bode well in the day of judgment.

Looks like there aren't (m)any here that have the testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ and actually have a love for the truth.

nomorenusernamesleft,

Do you disagree that in the prayer that Jesus taught us, He said, "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us?"

Do you disagree that people sin against themselves? That one can sin against oneself?

Have you never sinned against yourself?

Is not a sin against other people also a sin against THE LORD?

Jesus commands us to forgive other people.

We often sin against ourselves more than other people sin against us.

Jesus teaches us to pray "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us" yet you forbid a person that sinned against himself to forgive himself for having sinned against himself.

Of course, we are to seek God's forgiveness.

Of course, we are to forgive others.

But you forbid a person who sinned against himself to forgive himself for sinning against himself. Interesting!

I forgive you.

Matthew 9:2-3

"Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee."

And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.

God has authority to forgive sins.

Jesus commands us to forgive sins.

Jesus has authority to forgive sins.

nomoreusernamesleft forbids any thought of forgiving yourself.

nomoreusernamesleft does not believe one can forgive oneself for sinning against oneself.

I am not speaking of our sins against others, but I'm addressing when one sins against oneself.

Are we not also to forgive ourselves when we sin against ourselves?

Should not one forgive oneself for sinning against oneself?

Should we not practice that forgiveness as well?

Jesus told us to forgive. But one is not to forgive oneself? ...for sinning against oneself?

Jesus told us to forgive, bet we are not to forgive ourselves?

So, after Jesus tells us to forgive, you say it's a sin to forgive ourselves.

So, after Jesus tells us to forgive, you tell us that it is a sin for one to forgive himself for sinning against himself after Jesus tells us to forgive and teaches us to forgive. VERY INTERESTING that that is your view, nomoreusernamesleft.

I disagree with you.

Jesus tells us to forgive.

When one sins against oneself, one may need to forgive oneself. But the greatest forgiveness we seek is from God. God tells us to forgive. Should one not then forgive oneself for sinning against oneself?

I do not follow your logic, nomoreusernamesleft.

You are telling us not to forgive after Christ tells us to forgive.

I guess that Christ Jesus is the better head for the church than you are.

Who here is committing fornication against their own body? Who are you referring to? Are you implying that I am? Are you implying that everyone else in this conversation is? I’m sorry, but you come across as a Pharisee to me, speaking as though everyone else is living in sin, but you do not.
